Overview
Fieldnote started as an internal tool at a small research agency. Its founders wanted to turn it into a product for in-house research teams, and asked me to design and build the first public version alongside their two engineers.
The challenge
Research teams collect hours of interviews, but the insights end up buried in slide decks and long documents. When a product manager asks whether anyone has ever talked to customers about a topic, the honest answer is usually “probably, somewhere”. Fieldnote needed to make research easy to tag while you work and easy to find months later.
What I did
- Ran a two-week discovery sprint with five research teams to understand how they capture and share findings today.
- Designed a highlight-first workflow: select a quote in a transcript, tag it, and it becomes a searchable insight.
- Built the front end in React and TypeScript, including the transcript editor and a fast, keyboard-friendly search.
- Created a small component library so the team could keep shipping consistently after launch.
The outcome
Fieldnote launched publicly in March 2025 and was adopted by 120 teams in its first quarter. The average team now tags around 300 highlights a month, and search has become the most visited screen in the product.
“Clara designed it, built it and somehow made our engineers faster in the process. Fieldnote would not exist without her.”
